Company Overview
Innovation, perseverance and a keen eye on customer needs have been the hallmarks of Kennametal since its founding. After years of research, metallurgist Philip M. McKenna invented tungsten-titanium carbide in 1938, which, when used in cutting tools, led to a breakthrough in cutting steel more efficiently. Kennametal’s cutting tools cut faster and lasted longer, advancing metalworking from automobiles to aircraft to the entire machinery industry. With this invention, Philip founded McKenna Metals Company in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Later renamed Kennametal, the company is now a leader in metalworking, with its corporate headquarters still in Latrobe. McKenna Metal started with 12 employees and annual sales of about $30,000 in its first year. But during World War II, heavy industry in the United States went into overdrive. As the company’s cutting tools were widely used in the wartime economy, Kennametal’s annual sales approached $10 million and it had nearly 900 employees. After the wartime boom, Kennametal sought new ways to exploit the toughness and wear resistance of tungsten carbide alloys. In the mid-1940s, the company pioneered the use of carbide cutting tools in the mining industry, which led to the continued development of mining machinery. Kennametal also applied tungsten carbide to product applications that require extremely high wear resistance, such as valves, molds, drill bits and snow plow scrapers. Kennametal has a $30 million technology center at its global and North American headquarters in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and supporting facilities in Rogers, Alaska, Bedford, Pennsylvania, Evans, Georgia, Fürth and Essen, Germany, Shlomi, Israel, and Bangalore, India, all of which enable Kennametal to maintain its technological leadership. These facilities are committed to rapidly developing products designed to meet specific customer needs. Kennametal's deep understanding of materials science, expertise, innovation and excellent customer service are aimed at helping the world take off, moving the world forward, enabling the world and helping to build it. Kennametal's cutting tools, materials and wear-resistant solutions help customers run longer, cut faster and achieve greater precision.
