In 1945, Luke Dulle and Dick Lynn founded the company to revolutionize the operation and performance of rotating equipment. They combined their last names and named the new company DuBois Company. Its first product was an innovative rotary joint design that included a balanced mechanical seal. At the time, the most popular type of sealing mechanism was a pressure-type seal. These seals relied on system pressure to maintain mating surface friction, which proved problematic as equipment speeds increased. In printing presses, in particular, pressure-type seals were prone to rapid wear. Luke saw an opportunity to improve on industry standards, and the resulting design was an immediate success. By designing the mechanical seal into a rotary joint, Luke brought the company to the forefront of the industry and fueled DuBois Company’s growth, which continues to this day. In addition to printing presses, Luke went on to design joints for a wide range of applications, including air clutches, gearboxes, machine tool spindles, textile equipment, continuous casting machines, paper machine polishing machines, and rubber manufacturing machinery. The design proved so effective and reliable that DuBois products were used in virtually any industry that needed to transfer air, water, oil, or hydraulic fluid from a stationary source to a rotating portion of equipment. A few years after the company's successful start, Dick decided to focus on another business and he sold his shares to Luke.
