- Surface grinding machines: These are used to grind flat surfaces. They can be further classified into horizontal spindle and vertical spindle types. The workpiece is usually held on a magnetic chuck or a fixture and the grinding wheel moves across the surface of the workpiece.
- Cylindrical grinding machines: Used for grinding the outer cylindrical surfaces of workpieces such as shafts. The workpiece rotates while the grinding wheel moves parallel to the axis of the workpiece to achieve a precise cylindrical shape.
- Internal grinding machines: Designed to grind the inside diameter of holes and bores. The grinding wheel is usually smaller in diameter and is inserted into the hole to perform the grinding operation.
- Centerless grinding machines: A unique type of grinding machine where the workpiece is supported between a grinding wheel and a regulating wheel. It is used for grinding cylindrical workpieces without the need for centers and is highly efficient for mass production.
- Tool and cutter grinding machines: Specialized machines used to sharpen and re - profile cutting tools such as milling cutters, drills, and taps.
