What is an Air Cooler?

An air cooler, also known as an evaporative cooler, is a device that cools air through the process of evaporation. It consists of a water reservoir, a pump, a cooling pad, and a fan. The pump circulates water from the reservoir to the cooling pad. As air is drawn through the wet cooling pad by the fan, the water in the pad evaporates, absorbing heat from the air and thus reducing the air temperature. The cooled air is then blown into the surrounding environment.

The concept of using evaporation to cool air has been around for centuries. Ancient civilizations used simple methods such as hanging wet mats in front of windows to cool the air. The modern air cooler, with its mechanical components like pumps and fans, began to develop in the early 20th century. As technology advanced, the design and efficiency of air coolers improved. The use of better materials for cooling pads, more efficient fans, and advanced water - circulation systems have led to the air coolers we have today, which are widely used in areas with dry climates.

Air coolers operate based on the principle of evaporative cooling. When water evaporates, it changes from a liquid to a vapor state. This phase change requires energy, which is taken from the surrounding air in the form of heat. The cooling pad in the air cooler provides a large surface area for the water to evaporate. The fan draws in warm, dry air from the outside and forces it through the wet cooling pad. As the air passes through the pad, the water on the pad evaporates into the air, causing the air temperature to drop. The cooled air is then expelled into the room or area to be cooled.
