What is an Aerial Work Platform?

An aerial work platform (AWP), also known as an aerial lift or mobile elevated work platform (MEWP), is a mechanical device used to provide temporary access to elevated work areas. It consists of a platform or bucket that can be raised and lowered, usually mounted on a vehicle chassis, self - propelled base, or trailer. These platforms are equipped with safety features and controls to ensure the safety of the operator while working at heights, such as in construction, maintenance, and installation of electrical lines, signage, and building exteriors.

History of Aerial Work Platform

The history of aerial work platforms dates back to the early 20th century. The need for a safe and efficient way to access elevated areas led to the development of the first rudimentary lifts. Initially, these were simple hoisting devices with limited mobility. As technology advanced, with the development of hydraulics, motors, and better materials, aerial work platforms became more sophisticated. They evolved from basic scissor - lifts to a wide variety of designs including boom lifts and telescopic platforms, offering greater reach, height, and maneuverability. The increasing demand for working at heights in various industries further drove the innovation and improvement of these platforms.

Purpose of Aerial Work Platform

Principle of Aerial Work Platform

AWPs operate based on different mechanical and hydraulic principles depending on their type. For example, scissor - lifts work on the principle of a scissor - like mechanism. The platform is supported by a set of crossed metal supports that can be extended or retracted using a hydraulic system. As the hydraulic cylinders push or pull the scissor arms, the platform rises or falls. Boom lifts, on the other hand, use telescopic or articulating booms. The booms are extended and retracted using hydraulic power, allowing the platform to reach out and up to access different areas. The movement and operation of the platform are controlled by an operator using a control panel, which sends signals to the hydraulic pumps and motors to achieve the desired height and position.
