What is a Graduated Cylinder

Principle of Graduated Cylinder

The graduated cylinder operates on the principle of directly measuring the volume of a liquid. The liquid is poured into the cylinder, and the level of the liquid is read against the scale on the side of the cylinder. The reading is taken at the bottom of the meniscus, which is the curved surface of the liquid. For most liquids, the meniscus is concave, and the reading should be taken at the lowest point of the meniscus. This is because the liquid adheres to the sides of the glass, causing the meniscus to form. The scale on the graduated cylinder is calibrated to account for this, providing an accurate measurement of the actual volume of the liquid.
