What is Canned Pump

A canned pump, also known as a canned motor pump, is a type of centrifugal pump. It integrates the pump and the motor into one unit. The impeller of the pump and the rotor of the motor are mounted on the same shaft, and both the pump casing and the motor stator are equipped with a metal shield (canned). This shield separates the pumped medium from the motor parts, preventing leakage of the medium and making the pump suitable for handling toxic, flammable, explosive, and precious media.

History of Canned Pump

The canned pump was first developed in the United States in the 1950s. It was initially used in the nuclear power industry to transport radioactive media. Later, with the development of technology and the increasing demand for environmental protection and safety, canned pumps have been widely used in various fields such as the chemical industry, petroleum refining, and food processing.

Purpose of Canned Pump

Canned pumps are mainly used for transporting various liquids, especially those that require high sealing performance. They are widely used in the chemical industry to transport corrosive and toxic liquids, in the food industry to transport edible liquids, and in the refrigeration industry to transport refrigerants.

Principle of Canned Pump

The working principle of a canned pump is similar to that of a general centrifugal pump. The motor drives the impeller to rotate, generating centrifugal force. This force causes the liquid to flow from the center of the impeller to the periphery, increasing the pressure and velocity of the liquid. The liquid is then discharged from the pump outlet. Meanwhile, due to the rotation of the impeller, a low-pressure area is formed at the pump inlet, causing the liquid to be continuously sucked into the pump.
